Introduction to Taxonomy

Introduction

This workshop will illustrate and share with participants, the purpose and processes involved in taxonomy creation, which is a key fundamental for anyone seriously thinking of Content Management. The presentation will cover the basics of taxonomy and showcase an example from an industry.

Trainers

Ms Ainur-Rashidah Othman -BA, Dip (Lib & Info Sc.), MA

Ms Ainur-Rashidah Othman has been lecturing in Temasek Polytechnic, Division of Information Management since 1996. She has taught various subjects relating to organization of information, reference services and management of information resource centres. Prior to joining TP in 1996 Rashidah worked as a Reference Librarian with the National Library Board from 1988 to 1996. She has also conducted many courses on the provision of reference services to teachers and library personnel.

Ms Linda Lee

Ms Linda Lee joined Temasek Information Technology School in May 1998 as a lecturer. She was appointed as Course Manager to provide operational management for the successful running of the Diploma in Information Studies, later renamed to Diploma in Information Management in July 2002.

In 2001, Linda was awarded the Excellent Award in Teaching during Temasek Polytechnic Annual Recognition Day, an event to recognise staff for their significant contributions to Temasek Polytechnic's quality journal. She has used a variety of innovative teaching approaches, which have encouraged independent learning and thinking. Her innovative teaching activities include new initiatives in teaching methodology using problem-based learning. She has also introduced online learning by creating online quizzes and assessment on Blackboard Learning Management System as a platform to enhance computer-based learning in the subjects she taught.

Linda is an active member for her professional association, Library Association of Singapore (LAS). She regularly attended events organised by the Association and occasionally help out in committee works. She was also one of the council members from 1997 to 1999 and was secretary for PPM/LAS conference organising committee. She is currently participating as a member in the "Library 21 Focus Group" and as a member of the LAS Accreditation Subcommittee.

She was a consultant for Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) from November 2000 to October 2001. Her role was to provide library consultancy services for the setting of a Library at the AVA Headquarters in fulfilling the information needs of its staff. Linda was also the consultant for Ecquaria Technologies from Jan to April 2004 in proposing the Singapore Government Metadata Standards. As a consultant in the information industry, she has conducted various online searching workshops and reference-training programmes for information professionals.

Prior to joining Temasek Polytechnic, Linda had 17 years of working experiences in the Library and Information Service of Western Australia (LISWA) as a Senior Librarian and as a Campus Coordinator/Librarian in Nanyang Polytechnic.

Mr. N. Vijayan - MSc (Info Studies) from NTU & BA from NUS

Mr. N. Vijayan has been lecturing in Temasek Polytechnic for the past 7 years and has been specializing in the area of Records, Archives and Information Management subjects. His area of academic interest includes digital preservation, content and knowledge management.

Ms Rohaya Bte Mohammed

Ms Rohaya joined Temasek Polytechnic in 1997. She has taught various subjects in the Diploma of Information Management. She has also developed a couple of course documents and materials for a number of subjects for the Division. She has been a subject leader in a number of subjects such as Acquisitions and Serials Management, Principles of Bibliographic Control, Description and Representation of Documents.

She was one of the first who tried the problem-based learning approach for the Diploma in the subject Acquisitions and Serials Management. A paper on her experience was presented at the 2nd Asia-Pacific Conference on Problem based Learning. Her current interests include self-directed learning and student centered learning. She was also involved in the development of several subjects for the part-time Diploma in Library Studies which include technical services in libraries and independent studies for adult learners.

She has been consulted by the information industry on issues pertaining to content management, taxonomy, metadata and cataloguing standards in libraries and information companies.

Prior to joining Temasek Polytechnic, she was a librarian at the National Library Board and the Ministry of Education. Her work experience includes technical services and the management of special libraries.
